The Journalism crews headed to downtown Williston, venturing into the world of television. KUMV TV is celebrating 60 years in the area, opening back in 1957.

Our host, Nick Amatangelo, gave us a tour of the KUMV TV facilities. He has anchored the 6 & 10 pm newscast for more than two years. Jon Cole, an icon in the local sports community, remains a strong presence after 36 years in Williston. Jemeisha Lyde is the newest member of the television crew who already proves to be a great asset to the team!

While the main floor maintains the sales side of the business, the downstairs action is where we found the most interest!

Tapes of recordings fill the shelves in one room, a reminder of how fast technology is changing how things run.

Cameras that are now relics line the wall in another room.

The current camera used for on-the-spot recording looks quite intensive! Please be careful, Andrew Malone! Cassandra Webb looks to Nick Amatangelo for further details.

And… it’s a wrap!

The Journalism staff enjoyed the tour. Here are some of their thoughts to share:

Torrie Johnson: “I didn’t realize how many different point of views there were. I loved getting to see where it all happens. After seeing that I’m going to further my journalism career.”

Elizabeth Leko: “I felt it was good experience. I enjoyed learning and seeing the different aspects that come with news. Although I feel like if I were to continue Journalism I would move more towards the writing part, this trip helped to open my eyes to the different possibilities.”

Cassandra Webb: “I felt a little more comfortable in the newsroom with how small it was because I am a little shaken when speaking in front of a large group of people, let alone a whole town! I would consider doing something in the future with this profession.”

Andrew Malone: “I found the trip informational, fun, and exiting. During it I felt like a little kid in a candy shop. Nick Amatangelo was helping me out on learning my way through the current news station. I learned how to use the teleprompter and how hard it is. From what I learned, having a job in Journalism is time consuming.”
