“I Am” by Shiona Benally
September 11, 2019
I Am
I am a indigenous Native American
I am from two nations; Navajo nation and America
I identify myself as a Dine Woman
I am from Southern Utah within the four corners
Region; that include Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado
Where I come from my people are taught to respect the land and all creation
I am from the four sacred mountains of the Dine nation
I am rooted
I am humble
I am respected
I am a believer
I am a singer
I am a jingle dress dancer
I have faith
I am young
I am sensitive
Where I come from people
Stereotypes
say that native americans
Dropout of high school or teen girls get pregnant or as drunks and partiers
I pretend that I don’t care
But people make their own decisions
I
am
Striving
to
be
better
A better:
Sister
Cousin
Auntie
Niece
Singer
Dancer
Student
I will not give up
I want to graduate high school and go to college
And
I am determined to help my people
