The History Behind Cupid
February 14, 2019
When people mention Cupid, we are quick to think of a guy in a diaper with small wings who carries a bow and arrow. The figure known as cupid roots back in the greek era. He was known as the god of love, Eros. In Greek mythology it is ais that, “Eros struck at the hearts of gods and mortals and played with their emotions”, meaning the “Cupid” was a bit a whats the word, a prick (Laura Schumm 2014). He didn’t care or think about the consequences of his actions causing a lot of distraught and heartbreaks. Eros, better known as Cupid, can be portrayed as two different ways. In the Archaic period, he was portrayed as, “a handsome immortal who was irresistible to both man and gods” but in the Hellenistic period, he was portrayed as a, “a playful, mischievous child” (Laura Schumm 2014). Since the Hellenistic period, this version has become the valentines mascot known as Cupid and will continue to be used to represent this holiday.
