Discrimination in Education

Daryl Andrada, WHS Reporter

According to people, discrimination is treating a person unfairly because of who they are or because they possess a certain characteristics. Discrimination is a big problem in school, and it affects students’ performance in school. But why does discrimination happen in school?

We all know that school is a place where we learn and also a place we meet a lot of people and become friends. School is full of people with different races, different genders, different religion and etc. We probably thinking that school is one of the best places in the world. Is it really? Some students aren’t comfortable because they are offended by what they are. The most controversial issue in the school is discrimination by race. We come from different nations, and this affects the way of learning. Some students don’t feel like they belong to the school. In the past, students were separated by race; they had unequal right and very different type of education. Believe it or not, this separation is still happening today.Religion and religious beliefs should be respected for this is sacred. Some students are being persecuted because of their religion.Person with disabilities also experience discrimination. Some said that they shouldn’t be in school, because they don’t belong to the school. There’s a separation between slow learners and average students, because people see that they can’t go together in one class. Slow learners are offended in this case, because they know that they have the right to have the standard education. Discrimination in education may cause some health problem to students. Experiencing discrimination in education can cause stress responses similar to post traumatic stress disorder. Students who experience discrimination from other students are more likely to have a negative attitude about school and it can also affect a student’s academic performance, worst case scenario, dropping out of high school. Students must receive equal educational opportunity, even though they have different races, religions, and genders.

Discrimination isn’t really happening in our school, but it is starting to happen and we need to stop it. School is still promoting the anti-bullying policies. Let’s maintain the good environment in our school and make it a better place, so that other people feel like they belong to the school.
