Little Dreams, Big Dreams: How have your dreams and goals changed since Kindergarten?

Haley Peterson, Introduction to Journalism

When you were younger, what did you want to be?

Jamie Kohler: When I was younger I wanted to be a policeman or a firefighter and now it has definitely changed. I want to be a pharmacist. I just shifted my route to the medical field more.

Kodi Walter: I wanted to be a vet. There wasn´t really another idea I had, unless you count Rapunzel.

How have your dreams and/or goals changed as you started to grow?

Jamie:  They have changed because as I went through high school I realized what was more appealing to me and what I was better at.

Kodi: I realized life is a lot more harder than I thought It would be, for sure!

Did you prospective and ideas change? Was it due to peer pressure, it seemed cool (or boring), or because you thought is just wasn’t for you?

Jamie:  No. I would say no to all of the above. Chemistry class more or less changed me.

Kodi: I would say my ideas changed because when I started to get into art classes my family said I should get into an art job.

How did you see yourself changing from a young child?

Jamie: Just moving around from friends, then when i was growing up.

Kodi: Definitely my mind matured a lot more, maybe not being as uptight with my goals and with what I want to be.

Did/do you have any of the same dreams, goals, or ideas as now than when you were in elementary school? Do you think that they will change as you grow older?

Jamie: Yeah. I have different goals for life like having  a family, something I didn’t really think about when I was younger. And how I will go into the career field. They will change, and more opportunities will come up.

Kodi: Yes, just because you don’t have that dulled down sense that everything is going to be ok, when in reality everything is a big mess! […] My only goal as a child was to pretty much collect bouncy balls. They will change as I get older.

Do you think your kindergarten self would have seen yourself in the same position you are now?

Jamie: Probably not, I could have taken different paths.

Kodi: Probably not. I was a conceited little brat back then.

Have new interests influenced your life style or behavior, different from interests when you were in elementary school?

Jamie: Yeah, very differently. I used to ride bike; I liked different kind of music. Now I am more into medical and school.  I have a lot of new interests.

Kodi: Most definitely. I used to not be into art and then I came here and took some classes with Mr. Skinner, then I said this is really cool! I am more interested now than when I was a little kid, because you know… little kids: Focus problems!

Do you think new technology and inventions have helped aid your decision in ideas, goals, and dreams? Has it aided to change you from elementary school to senior year?

Jamie: Yeah definitely. Technology makes the career field I chose easier and communication easier. It has definitely aided to change me as a person.

Kodi: Yeah, because you use a lot more tech for professions than what you use on papers.

What do you think will change an elementary students ideas, goals, and dreams the most? What do you see is influencing seniors the most? Would it be wise to change it? Why or why not?

Jamie: Probably how they react with people and their household, and what it´s like. The news and teachers influence you too. I think changing it wouldn’t be wise.

Kodi: What their parents advise them to do. No, it wouldn’t be wise because it part of what makes peoples personalities the way they are. The influences give them different ideas and experiences.
