After a successful season with a record of 38-8 at the 121lb weight class, Vernon qualified to go to state by placing 2nd at WDA. Keeping up with his hard work in the wrestling room after WDA, he was prepared to win his way through the state bracket. “The thoughts were crazy. I had trained and practiced for it all year having one goal in mind, being a state champion. Many ups and downs occurred frequently and many mixed emotions came from not taking state”, said Vernon. With the whole team cheering as hard as they could on the side, Vernon gave it his all and ended up getting second with the final score of the match being 12-6. The head wrestling coach, Coach Jones, said, “He earned his spot on the podium. I’m very proud of what he’s done this season and I’m looking forward to seeing him progress for his senior year.” As for Vernon, he took the loss gracefully and now has some more fuel to push him for that State Championship title next year. Vernon is optimistic and already preparing for the next wrestling season saying “But I can only improve with the team and with myself most importantly. I’m looking forward to next season and to the improvements that I’ll make.” He is a true example of what coyotes do here at WHS. He gives it his all on the mat and looks for the good in everything. Good job, Vernon!
